Moving Day and first steps: 1/12/2016 and 1/13/2016

When we agreed to embark on this EWB journey, we realized we would not be able to keep renting our Boston area apartment.  With no funds coming in, the rent was simply too high and our savings would be wiped out in short order.  We also realized that it was not a valid excuse to remain, so we gave 60 days of notice and broke our lease.  In the “hot” Boston rental market this was plenty of time; new tenants were moving in as soon as we were moving out.

Moving is never very fun, it’s rather painful to have to touch every single object you own.  The worst part is the last 10% takes 90% of the effort. Nothing we own is particularly valuable, no heirlooms or fine china, just 1,000 items which cost $20 each.  If we had to replace everything it would be death by 1,000 cuts.

We packed up all our worldly possessions (except for what we can carry on our backs) and stuffed it all in to a storage locker today.  It turns out, that everything we own will fit nicely in a cube, 7.5 ft by 10 ft by 8 ft.

Our Cube

A journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step, in our case this step was a 125 mile drive to New London, CT followed by an hour-long ferry ride to our friend’s house on Long Island.  They were gracious to give us a ride down island (in a snow storm) to JFK so we could catch the first of three flights which will take us to Guatemala City.  First stop: San Diego.

Thanks guys!

We will remain in San Diego for about a week, visiting family and friends, and it will give us one finial opportunity to provision before we made the hop South.

Now you are all caught up.  I’m currently sitting on the airplane to San Diego; there is about two hours left in the flight, and scattered lightning to the south.
